As a growing and pioneering municipality, Sisimiut Municipality works on improving the overall framework conditions within which private enterprise can develop.

 

The various areas of action are assembled in Sisimiut Municipality’s trade and industry plan, which has been drawn up and is being implemented by the Commercial Secretariat in cooperation with the municipal administration.

Under the headings of trade and industry plan and training and education, you can read more about the ongoing work to improve the skills and qualifications found in the Municipality. The ongoing measures within the traditional growth areas of tourism and fishing are also treated in the trade and industry plan.

 

Within the fishing industry, Sisimiut every other year hosts the Polar Fish fishery trade fair, which puts the focus on this key industry and its further development.

 

The commercial and industrial development is also to a large extent about improving the municipal infrastructure and making developed sites available.

 

Concerning infrastructure projects, the Municipality and Commercial Secretariat are chiefly working on harbour enlargement and a road between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq.

 

This road is a major project with huge implications for the commercial and industrial development of the Municipality, and an entire page is devoted to it.

 

In recent times, interest in Greenland’s massive potential in hydropower and mining has grown as a result of rising oil and mineral prices.

 

During this period a hydropower plant is under construction near Sisimiut, and the possibilities for an aluminium smelting plant are being investigated, while most recently oil exploration has begun in the vicinity of the town.
