Aluminum Smelting Plant

Sisimiut Municipality is cooperating with US aluminum producer Alcoa, Greenland Development and Greenland’s Home Rule on investigating the potential for siting an aluminum smelting plant in the Municipality.

In the first instance, the Municipality has prepared a report stating three suitable sites for the plant. These three sites, respectively near Sisimiut, between Sisimiut and Sarfannguit and in the vicinity of Itilleq, are shown on the map.

Infrastructure and local labour
The next step is to get the smelting plant integrated in the overall plans for Sisimiut Municipality.

Since it’s expected this plant will employ 600-700 people, it will have a clear impact on the development of the infrastructure, namely house building, industrial areas, harbour and road.

A project of such significance and impact means the Municipality is stressing citizen inclusion, and regular public meetings are being held on the project.
