New industrial areas

The Municipality wishes to make areas available so all wishing to set up a new business or expand an existing one have the chance.

With the establishment of a road between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq, further commercial activity is expected, and thus the need for an industrial area near the town and harbour, connected to the town by a new by-pass, becomes even more pressing.

Sisimiut
A growing need for new industrial areas in Sisimiut town has become apparent in recent years. The existing such areas are largely already fully exploited, and at the same time, some industrial areas have been walled in by the expansion of the town.

This development limits the expansion potential of current businesses, and provides for unfavourable conditions for the establishment of new ones. Some of these centrally-located industrial areas should therefore be phased out over time, in order that the areas can be better integrated and used more directly in the surrounding urban environment.

However, this cannot happen before completely new industrial areas have been established, in which there is both enough room for new businesses and where existing businesses can access the expansion options they need.

Kangerlussuaq
Major industrial areas were planned in the “Village plan for Kangerlussuaq” drawn up in 2003. The areas are characterized by low utilization and disused buildings from the time of the base. Some new industrial buildings have been built, but as of October 2007 the village plan is being revised, and round table discussions have been held with various players.

A new proposed plan will be prepared and is expected to be submitted for consultation at the end of 2007, and one matter being considered will be better use of the industrial areas.

Further information
In order that the industrial areas can be realized, a Local Plan has been drawn up.
