Oil exploration

In 2007 international oil companies have applied for 7 exploration and exploitation permits for 8 possible blocks out in the Davis Strait from Sisimiut. Oil companies from the US, Canada, the UK, Sweden, Denmark and Greenland have applied for and been allocated the blocks in the sea northwest of Sisimiut.

Future centre of the oil industry?
Sisimiut serves as a natural starting point for oil exploration and hopefully for oil extraction at a later time as well.

The town is on the one hand the place closest to the licence areas, and on the other, the home of the most northern ice-free harbour on the Greenlandic west coast.

At the same time, Sisimiut is the nearest neighbour of Greenland’s international airport at Kangerlussuaq, and Sisimiut is also the largest town in the vicinity of the blocks.

Sisimiut Municipality and the Commercial Secretariat are working together with trade and industry to serve these companies.

One of the reasons for the establishment of the www.sisimiutsupplybase.com homepage is to provide the oil companies with direct knowledge about, and access to, the municipal trade and industry.
