Kangerlussuaq/Søndre Strømfjord
The gateway to Greenland is to be found in Sisimiut Municipality.
Kangerlussuaq Airport, which is also known as SondreStrom and Søndre Strømfjord, is a former American Air Force base, now converted into an international airport. The airport handles flights to and from North America and Europe, as well as internal flights in Greenland.
At 2,800 metres, the runway is Greenland’s longest and the airport is operational the whole year round. At the same time, it enjoys the interior climate at head of Kangerlussuaq Fjord, which makes the weather more stable and less subject to cancellations than on Greenland’s west coast, where strong winds and fog can affect the flights.
The airport serves Air Greenland and SAS on a daily basis, as well as various private and military flights.
The airport is operated by Mittarfeqarfiit/Grønlands Lufthavnsvæsen (The Greenlandic Airport Authority, webpage in Greenlandic and Danish only), and you can find detailed technical information on the airport, as well as links to other airports in Greenland, on their homepage.
