The municipal merger

News - June 10 2008
Today the joint municipal council announced that a winner of the name and logo competition has been found.

The new municipality will be named Qeqqata Kommunea / The Central Municipality (or The Municipality in the Middle), after its geographic location in central Western Greenland.

The new logo can be seen below, and it symbolizes the 2 towns and 6 smalelr settlements along with some of the prominent mountain peaks common to the area.

The two municipalities Sisimiut and Maniitsoq become one from January 1, 2009, but the process of merging two distinct social, political and administrational landscapes is already running, with a joint consultant hired by the two municipalities in order to coordinate the work.

Over time we will publish a number of documents relating to the project's current status, and links to these files are found by clicking here.

However, the published information is only in Greenlandic and Danish, but you are always welcome to contact the merger consultant for further information.

You can also direct any questions you may have about the merger, and the new municipality at the heart of the Greenland West Coast, to either Sisimiut or Maniitsoq municipality.
