Cultural experiences

The everyday is the basis of the importance of cultural life, and in this region everyday life is full of experiences for both locals and visitors.

Kaffemik and meeting with the locals
Here in Greenland no celebration of even minor events can go on without a kaffemik where family, friends and acquaintances arrive and depart in a gentle stream, get the latest news and swap experiences.

Meet the locals
As a visitor you’ll have the chance to really experience daily life in a Greenlandic home, whether you’re invited in Sisimiut town, Sarfannguit or Itilleq. And if you’re already staying in a town or village, why not be guided around the houses, learn about the local history and meet the people?

Historic tours
The Arctic Circle Region offers a spread of possibilities for those interested in cultural history. Museum visits are available in both Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut town, and all four settlements offer guided tours by local people.

In Itilleq you also have the option of visiting the splendid church which was relocated in 1962 from Knud Rasmussen’s Thule, and in it you can listen to lectures on life in a modern Greenlandic village.

Handicrafts
Or how about seeing some artisans work at close quarters in Sisimiut town? You can experience this if you visit the skin-sewers’ huts and the artists’ workshop where you’ll see Greenlandic materials prepared for production of useful objects, as well as adornments, and then sold in the local shop or directly by the artist.

Kayaks and sealskin
There’s also time in Sisimiut to see kayak-rolling, where local equilibrists give a demonstration in the use of the narrow vessel as a fishing tool and means of transport.

And if that’s not enough to impress you, then maybe the sealskin sewing is just the thing to end an eventful day before you go on a trip to the sealers’ sales outlet and buy reindeer meat or freshly-caught seal for dinner.
