Cultural-historical hikes

The best way of seeing the local towns and villages up close is by walking among houses and through streets feeling the history of the places and calmly observing life go on around you.

In Itilleq, Kangerlussuaq, Sarfannguit and Sisimiut you can take guided walks in which you’ll discover all kinds of things about the local history, perhaps meet artisans, and generally get insight into the everyday life of Greenland around the Arctic Circle.

In Sisimiut you can also explore – either alone or with expert guides – the ruins of 4000-year old settlements of the first known arrivals in the region, and a short distance from there take the plunge and visit the world’s most advanced shrimp processing plant as a testament to the town’s ongoing development.

Asummiut
Quite a large number of ancient monuments are to be found in the Arctic Circle Region, and Asummiut – or Gammel Holsteinsborg – near the new airport at Sisimiut is one of the few which has been excavated by archaeologists.

For more than 4000 years, Inuit peoples have lived in the area, and the entire area from the new bridge out to the airport is densely populated with settlements from prehistoric periods. A Saqqaq-culture settlement has also been excavated here and ruins from the times of the Greenlandic and Danish whalers can clearly be seen.

You can visit these places alone or in the company of local guides expert in their cultural history, and who can inform you of their significance for the cultural development of the Arctic Circle Region.

Teleøen - Sallinnguit
For thousands of years the Inuit and their descendants have chosen to live on a small island just off the mainland, where Sisimiut town stands today.

Today, the island shows signs of a long history of habitation, and Sallinnguit – or Teleøen in the everyday speech – is one of the places in the Arctic Circle Region where the meeting between past and present is most apparent.

Take a guided tour to Teleøen and discover Inuit history before the arrival of Europeans, see the old ruins and enjoy the picturesque view out over the town and the ancient whaling grounds.
