
Sisimiut Museum
Sisimiut Museum is a district museum for the history of civilizations, as well as a special museum for trade, shipping, and industry.
The museum is situated in the old colonial part of Sisimiut town and is an important cultural centre for both visitors and residents alike.
The museum area
Sisimiut Museum is located in a number of beautiful old buildings which constitute the first and original colonial houses in town. On a small ridge above the museum sits one of the town’s two churches, and below this church is the museum area with severel noteworthy buildings. In this area is also the small blue-painted church, which is the oldest surviving church in Greenland.
The buildings
The main building is the former home of the colonial manager, where a part of the exhibitions are and where the museum administration has its office. In both Gammelhuset (The Old House), Halvvejshuset (The Halfway House), and Tørvehuset (The Peat House), which are all part of the museum area, you can see exhibitions about the culture and history of Greenland and Sisimiut
Sisimiut Museum specializes in the trade, industry, and shipping of Greenland, but the museum also offers alternating exhbitions, making the place alive and attractive for everybody.
Further information
The museum area is located in the central part of Sisimiut town, and is visible from the main street Aqqusinersuaq which runs through town all the way to the harbour front.
