Skiing

The Arctic Circle Region can offer skiing enthusiasts all of the following – skiing around fjords and lakes, on hills, ski runs, pistes, and mountains – and even on the ice cap itself. Whether you’re after cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, long trips between the mountains or across the Greenlandic ice cap, you can start getting your stuff ready now.

Winter enough for everything
The winters here are long, giving you time to experience everything you want. The only thing you need to do is choose. Are you seeking relaxation with the family, coffee breaks and closeness to the town and village? Or would you prefer many, long days in the outdoors on a Greenlandic sleigh and hundreds of kilometres of ski-run ahead of you? Or would you even prefer an internationally competitive environment and major sports events?

Here in the Arctic Circle Region you can experience all this, and more.

Midwinter offers splendid experiences for the robust among you. Under the frosty gleam of the moon or northern lights, the landscape can appear as clear as in daylight, and with the snow under your skis and the stars above you, you’ll find it hard to return to your cabin or house.

Smiles only a minute away – no matter how far you go
For most people, however, the best months for skiing are between February and April, when the sun begins to gain in strength, the days grow milder and the snow usually lies deepest. And when the day ends, all come home with a good story, tired legs and a big grin.

Most skiers use either Sisimiut or Kangerlussuaq as their starting point, and on the following pages you can read more about the region’s cross-county skiing runs, ski lifts, long trips and the Arctic Circle Race competition.

You’ll also find links to tour operators who can help you put together your dream skiing experience along the Arctic Circle.
