Cross-country skiing
In the Arctic Circle Region, cross-country skiing is a part of the residents of Sisimiut’s everyday, where a well-developed system of cross-country tracks link the town to an alpine skiing area and further out into the mountains.
Whether you’re looking for short runs across a frozen lake or a full day’s skiing on Grønland Rundt, there are many kilometres of skiing to enjoy for the cross-country skier in the Arctic Circle Region.
Short pistes
Sisimiut Skiing Centre ensures that right through the winter a number of pistes are available for both children and adults, meaning there are experiences for all ages and all levels of skill.
For children, there are ½, 1, 2, 3 and 4 kilometre-long pistes, while for adults the pistes are 5, 7½ and 10 kilometres long. And on the so-called scout lake on the outskirts of Sisimiut town there’s also a 2 kilometre-long illuminated piste.
Long pistes
If 10 km is too little and the Arctic Circle Race’s 160 km too much, then at times during the late winter there are opportunities to try your skills on two longer routes - Alanngorsuaq Rundt and Grønland Rundt – 25 km and 43.8 kilometres long respectively.
The second of these is special in being a miniature of the outline of Greenland, and the route includes signs for various residences and landmarks, meaning you can manage the Grønland Rundt in only a single day.
The scale means that each kilometre you put behind you on the route corresponds to 236 kilometres of Greenland’s coastline. If you’d like to study the route in more detail, you can see an overview map here.
You can also see an overview map of the Alanngorsuaq Rundt by clicking here.
The open landscape
Besides the prepared pistes, all residences in the Arctic Circle Region offer you the option of strapping on your touring skis and heading out into the mountains and fjords. Here, you’re your own master of the distances and difficulties, but if you’ve interest in trying longer, expedition-like skiing trips accompanied by experienced guides, you can read more about the options open to you here.
